Alpha Lipoic Acid

Alpha Lipoic Acid is a vitamin-like antioxidant, sometimes referred to as the "universal antioxidant" due to the fact that it is soluble in both fat and water. It neutralizes oxygen radicals, ionized metals, as well as a variety of other free radicals, and acts as a coenzyme for whole body glucose utilization. It also increases intracellular glutathione levels, often reduced by aging, and moderate/strenuous exercise. Alpha Lipoic Acid regenerates Vitamins C and E, glutathione and Coenzyme Q10 back to their active states. Ascorbyl Palmitate is a fat-soluble form of vitamin C. It is a known oxygen-scavenging antioxidant. When ascorbyl palmitate is incorporated into the cell membranes of red blood cells, it has been found to protect them from oxidative damage and to protect vitamin E (α-tocopherol) from oxidation by free radicals. Calcium (Ca) is a major mineral required for the growth and maintenance of strong, normal bones and teeth. Calcium is also very important to the normal functioning of heart and skeletal muscles. It is needed to send nerve impulses, for blood clotting, and is instrumental in the release of some hormones. Calcium is particularly important for pregnant and lactating mares and growing foals. The ratio of calcium to phosphorus is recommended to stay near 2:1 in the overall diet. Vitamin D is required for the absorption of calcium.

Vitamin B (B-vitamin Complex) is the name of a group of water-soluble vitamins that play essential roles in virtually every organ and every cell of the horse's body. B vitamins are required for synthesis of coenzymes relating to carbohydrate, protein, lipid metabolism, and ATP synthesis. They also function as cofactors for enzymes in energy metabolism, red blood cell production, fatty acid synthesis, and antioxidant defense mechanisms. While most B vitamins are produced to some extent in the hindgut of the horse, dietary supplementation can optimize bio-availability.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) is a sugar-derived water-soluble vitamin with strong anti-oxidant actions, protecting against free radical attack. Vitamin C is required for the development of cartilage, blood vessels, Carnitine, and the brain hormone Norepinephrine. Required for the synthesis of Tryptophan, Lysine, and Proline, it also promotes the formation of collagen and elastin, thereby facilitating the process of wound healing.

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that is not primarily obtained from the diet but rather from exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D is the master regulator of calcium metabolism. It controls the absorption of calcium, movement of calcium in and out of the bone, and the amount of calcium that is kept in the body or excreted through the kidney.
