Lyle Lovett

American Quarter Horse Breeder, 4-Time Grammy Award-Winning Recording Artist and Platinum Performance® Client Since 2005

This four-time Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, actor and record producer feels the most comfortable on the back of a horse. Born just outside of Houston, Texas on his great-great-grandfather’s farm established in the 1840’s, Lyle is the fifth generation of his family to live on the ranch with his mother, uncle and several cousins still residing there as well. Growing up, riding horses was a part of everyday life that Lyle never took for granted. He could also be found tagging along with his uncle to watch their Quarter Horses on the racetrack. It wasn’t until 2001 that Lyle went to watch the NRBC (National Reining Breeders Classic) and fell in love with the sport of reining. Since then, he has found his once-in-a-lifetime horse, Smart and Shiney, been inducted into the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame and awarded the National Reining Horse Association Lifetime Achievement Award. He sums it up perfectly by saying: “I’ve always thought that success is being able to do well enough to be able to keep doing what you love. I love being connected to the land and to my heritage and being able to do it through having a few horses and raising a few babies.”

How Playing Music and Riding Horses are Alike

“Playing music and riding are actually quite similar, because so much of it is about feel. So much of a performance is about making adjustments, whether you're adjusting to the players in your band or to the audience. It's really all about "feel" and being there in the moment. That's something consistent and appealing about both riding and playing music. If I'm riding, there's no other place in the world that my mind goes at that moment. When I sing a song, it's that exact same feeling. I'm able to be right there on my horse or right there inside the song-and that's a great feeling. That's what makes riding and working with horses so appealing. It's never automatic. It's never about going out and going through the motions. It can be, if you're not open to the experience, but then you miss the best part. The underlying appeal of working with horses is that it really is a metaphor for our lives in a bigger sense. I think it's what draws us to horses in the first place. Anytime I get to go out to the barn and work with a horse, it reminds me of what's good in life.”

Why I Choose Platinum?

“I feel much better when I eat right, nutrition is just so important. Horses are such magnificently complicated animals, they’re so grand. If you don’t give a horse the proper nutrition, then their health can go backwards way quicker than it can go forwards. We’ve always done our absolute best to feed the very best to our horses, and Platinum has been a part of our program for 20 years. It’s the only supplement that was recommended by every veterinarian I worked with across the board.”
