Nutrition for Equine Performance and Recovery

Athletic horses are particularly susceptible to the adverse effects of poor quality diets. Fortunately, special care and attention to the diet will improve exercise performance, recovery, overall health and well-being. Nutritional support can range from comprehensive vitamin and mineral support to specific amino acids, antioxidants, and muscle and joint protectants.

  • Decreased bowel bulk and fecal production
  • Reduction in lactate production during exercise
  • Increased intramuscular fat stores and dependence on fat for energy during exercise
  • Delayed fatigue onset
  • Improved glucose-to-insulin ratio, and lower heart rates during exercise
  • Reduction in glucose utilization and sparing of muscle glycogen

Key Nutrients Supporting Athletic Performance and Recovery

There are several nutrients that can help support maintenance and enhancement of muscle, reduce recovery time and improve overall health and longevity in equine athletes.

  • Branched chain amino acids supply muscles with energy, help regulate muscle protein synthesis and breakdown, and help reduce both muscle soreness after strenuous exercise and degradation of muscle glycogen.
  • β-hydroxy β-methylbutyrate (HMB), is a leucine metabolite that has been extensively used as an ergogenic aid for strength/power athletes, primarily because it elicits anti-catabolic, anabolic, and lipolytic effects.
  • Chromium preserves lean tissue and is of particular concern because it is excreted in the urine of strenuously exercised horses fed high-grain diets.
  • L-carnitine carries long-chain fatty acids into the mitochondria, enhances athletic performance and helps reduce muscle damage and soreness after exercise, possibly by causing vasodilation.
  • Arginine is a precursor to nitric oxide (NO), a compound that helps regulate blood flow.
  • Glutamine assists in the synthesis of NO, which is a key factor in performance, partly due to its role in regulating blood flow and delivering nutrients to exercising muscles.
  • Antioxidants help modulate oxidative tissue damage that occurs due to the 40-fold increase in oxidative metabolism experienced during strenuous exercise in horses. Antioxidants such as vitamins E and C and selenium help increase exercise tolerance and reduce airway inflammation.
  • Glucosamine is a precursor to glycosaminoglycans, the compressive-resistant component of cartilage, and has anti-catabolic activities in equine cartilage cells.
  • MSM (methyl-sulfonyl-methane) is a naturally-occurring compound that helps maintain normal connective tissues and has anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenging activities.
  • ASU (Avocado Soy Unsaponifiables), helps reduce loss of joint space among osteoarthritic individuals, increases glycosaminoglycan synthesis, and reduces cartilage breakdown.
  • Whey protein is a rich source of essential amino acids and has anabolic effects when combined with training.
