George Harrower
Name: George Harrower City/State: Santa Barbara, CA Age: 76 Hobbies: Running Platinum Fueled Since: 1997 Platinum Performance Products: Platinum Performance Granular, Hemo-Flo, Myo-Aid, Ortho-Chon Background: After retiring, George came down with a serious illness and was hospitalized. Prednisone medication helped nudge his weight to 204 pounds. Forty pounds overweight with poor circulation, it was considerably difficult to walk even 100 yards. He joined a gym, and began training with longtime triathlete and athletic trainer, Peter Park. Park introduced him to Platinum Performance. Quote: "I've really improved. Who would have thought I'd be running on the beach doing sit-ups and push-ups?" Follow-Up: Runs on a treadmill daily for 30 minutes and does weights for an hour, twice a week. Also runs outdoors twice a week; six miles one day, and three or four the next. Harrower also has completed numerous foot races over the past six years, including the recent 2003 Chardonnay 10K, finishing in 2:16:59 and placing 1st in the men's 75 and older category.
"George Harrower: From the hospital to the half-marathon in two years."
Two years ago, George H. was in the hospital. Today he's training with Triathlete Peter Park, jogging along the beach in Santa Barbara and working out at the gym. Oh, and he's 73. He has a workout routine that a 20-year-old would envy. "I work out on the treadmill for a half hour a day, and then I work out with weights for an hour, twice a week. I run twice a week, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'll do six miles one day, and three or four the next," George said.
George, a retired insurance agent originally from Canada, settled in Santa Barbara 22 years ago. He was "retired" then, but started a second business, supplying meat and seafood to Santa Barbara restaurants. He built up the business from scratch, and sold it three years ago. But then his health took a blow. "I got very ill two and a half years ago," George said. "I wound up on prednisone, and it made me bulk up to 204 pounds." After getting out of the hospital, George said he made a conscious choice to get in good shape. "I thought, 'I'm going to do something about this, or I'll just have to put my feet up and watch TV for the rest of my life."
"I was in really bad shape when I started working out. I was 40 pounds overweight, and the circulation in my legs had gotten so bad that I had difficulty walking 100 yards." He joined a gym, and met Park, a longtime triathlete and athletic trainer.
In addition to workouts, Park introduced him to Platinum Performance products. George began taking Platinum Performance Wellness Formula with his breakfast. "Oh, I love it. I put it in my oatmeal or my yogurt every morning. I have it every morning. I found it gave me the energy, and I was able to work out," he said "my legs improved immensely within the first two weeks of using Platinum Performance." That was something new for the retired businessman, who admits he'd never been much of an athlete before. "I was never a runner," George said with a laugh. "I played hockey in high school, but that was about it." Now, after taking Platinum for two years and training with Park for two years, George feels like an athlete.
He completed a 10-mile winery race in Santa Barbara in April 1999, and in November, completed the News-Press half marathon - 13.5 miles - in Santa Barbara. "It was fun! I really enjoyed it," George said with a grin. "I've really improved. Who would have thought two years ago, I'd be running on the beach doing sit-ups and push-ups?" he asked.
George gives Park and Platinum equal credit for his new athletic streak. "I tell Peter Park he has dyslexia: he trains me like I'm 37, not 73," George laughed. Platinum, George said, gives him the energy to train. "I wouldn't do without it," he said. "I like the taste. I tried a lot of things, a lot of different nutrition, and Platinum seemed to just do it for me." He said it's also helped him keep his weight down. "I was really into sweets a lot, especially at night. But I would take a spoonful of Platinum instead, and it just kind of took the edge off. I've always had trouble with my weight, and keeping it off. But now my weight doesn't vary at all; I range between 150 and 155."
George says he's having fun now, in his retired life. "I enjoy my workout schedule. I look forward to it; it's not like I'm dragging," he said. He and his wife - who is 13 years younger - have six grandchildren and 13 grandchildren between them, ranging in age from 23 to almost two. In between working out and playing around in the stock market on his computer, George likes to go visit them. Or have them come visit him. Since he's been taking Platinum Performance supplements, George says he's a different grandfather. "Before when the kids came, I'd almost hide," he joked. "Now, I can keep up with them. I have the energy. And I really look forward to it." So much so that he'll travel to do it these days. "I can hop on a plane without hesitation, or drive six hours. If it's a quick trip, I can do it, and I'll pack my Platinum." platinum client profiles home
