Boyd Zontelli
Tevis Cup winner says his horses had an improved mental outlook and did not lose weight while competing with Platinum Performance Equine
Endurance riding enthusiast, Boyd Zontelli from Agoura, California, has ridden over 6,475 AERC (American Endurance Ride Conference) recorded miles in his long involvement with horses. Those same miles would have taken him back and forth across the United States and then some. His ride record includes 8 finishes on the grueling Western States Tevis trail, which he won 3 times, setting a trail record for shortest finish time in 1981 on Rushcreek Hans.
In 1996, as International endurance was just getting started in the United States, Zontelli coached the team from Qatar at the Endurance World Championships in Kansas.
Along the way, Zontelli discovered Platinum Performance. He found that the horses that he trained and rode in competitions had more staying power and better attitudes for the long miles of endurance when he fed the all-in-one feed supplement.
In 1999 Zontelli took a 2nd at the Tevis Cup ride, this time riding Reuben James. The same year the University of California at Davis Veterinarian Program monitored horse weight maintenance or loss during and after the Tevis ride. “Every horse on that ride lost between 40 and 100 pounds, except for my three horses that were on Platinum Performance,” Zontelli said. “ Rueben actually gained 5 lbs…. and my other two horses that were on the ride only lost 8 or 10 pounds.”
He continued, “I feel that their mental outlook is better. They have more sustained energy, and there is more real bottom to the horse.” For Zontelli, this means that the horse is stronger and in the race longer. Zontelli supplements all of his performance horses with Platinum Performance. He said that he feeds 3–4 scoops a day during training. During a race, he gives them as much as they want.
Rueben has now been sold to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum of the United Arab Emirates. Zontelli said, “His trainer knows that I have been using Platinum Performance, and I hope that he continues.”
