Supporting your Horse through Shipping Stress
Most horses learn to cope with short trips in the trailer, but long-distance travel can create many different reactions in the horse including elevations in heart rate, decreased fluid intake, loss of appetite, weight loss, dust inhalation and coughing, diarrhea, colic, rhabdomyolysis (tying up), and respiratory infections commonly known as "shipping fever".
Here are a few tips to help your horse through the shipping process:
1. Never transport a sick horse long distances, or even one that has been exposed to sick horses.
2. Supplement a healthy horse with an immune support formula, such as Platinum Immune Support, beginning a few days before travel starts.
3. Try to travel less than 12 hours at a time.
4. Stop every 3-4 hours, if possible, during the trip to offer rest. It is best to unload and allow the horse to briefly graze, if possible. If not, just stopping is beneficial to the horse, as he won't be forced to counter the movement of the trailer.
5. Offer water every time that you stop.
6. Provide adequate airflow in the trailer for ventilation.
7. Allow each horse approximately 2-3 days to recover after a long trip, before expecting a great deal of physical activity from him.

When does my horse need additional immune support?
When your horse is sick or injured it is important to provide additional support to his immune system. There are also predictable times of distress that could lead to sickness in a healthy horse.
